To be the global centre for the provision of maritime expertise and associated services
The Baltic Expert Witness Association is the successor to the old Baltic expert witness panel. This was a simple directory of Baltic members offering expert witness services. The experts in the main were drawn from the ranks of senior Baltic members with a career in shipbroking services.
Following conversations in 2017 among a group of these experts, it was decided that things could be done better. The users of the expert services, including lawyers and P&I Clubs had identified the need for a more transparent body where a broader scope of experts could be found in one clearly defined place. With the support and input of the Baltic Exchange, BEWA was born.
BEWA is an association of maritime experts under the Baltic Exchange umbrella.
It is managed by its Council, elected from BEWA members, and governed by its agreed Rules. All BEWA members subscribe to the Baltic Code of Conduct.
It holds regular membership meetings and presentations, assists in the mentoring of new recruits and acts as the promotional and marketing tool for its members.
It aims to be the representative forum of the maritime expert witness industry.
Key points are:
BEWA membership is open to all maritime experts and aspiring experts, not engaged in shipbroking, irrespective of whether they have ever been a member of the Baltic Exchange or a recognised shipbroker.
BEWA aims to create a broad scope of available expertise by embracing masters, surveyors, naval architects, engineers etc.
BEWA membership is also open to Baltic Exchange full members (subject to acceptance by BEWA) at no additional fee to their Baltic membership.
BEWA has its own table of membership fees. This enables non-practising shipbroker experts to join BEWA at a much lower membership fee than that charged for sole-trader membership of the Baltic Exchange.
BEWA expert members are also entitled to purchase Baltic data on a case-by-case basis to assist in their work for clients.
We look forward to establishing BEWA as the centre of maritime expert witness world.
