DESCRIPTION:Expert Witness Conference 2021\nFriday 5 November 2021\nHybrid Event: Attend in person at Church House in Westminster or Virtually\n6 hours CPD/CME\nDear Jeffrey\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI am very much looking forward to the conference next Friday 5 November and do hope you will be coming. \nIn preparation for the day\, I had a briefing meeting with the new Master of the Rolls and our keynote speaker\, Sir Geoffrey Vos\, as he was preparing his address. \nI was shocked at what he plans to do with the civil justice system and the massive implications for experts. It is likely to be the biggest shake up to the system since the Civil Procedure Rules came into force in 1999.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHe is almost fanatical about converting the whole ligation process to be online. In fact\, when I passed him a printed copy of the conference brochure\, he refused even to touch it and insisted on looking at it on screen. He said it was important to set an example.\nHe is proposing radical changes to the way experts provide their evidence with a much greater unbundled approach\, saying current methods are “too lengthy\, too costly and too elaborate.” He read extracts from his draft address (on screen of course) and experts will be in for some real shocks. In essence litigation will be much faster and all conducted online. It may even mean the end of live oral evidence. He wants to make extensive use of “blockchain” technology – an immutable\, unhackable and dencentralised method of recording information that is linked\, with all nodes reflecting the updated data as it occurs. He wants experts to bypass traditional expert reports and said: “the end of the Word is nigh”  referring to the Microsoft Word programme. \nIt is really important that as many experts as possible attend and listen to the Master of the Rolls\, and have the opportunity to pose questions. Whilst his proposals relate to the civil justice system\, their implementation will undoubtedly impact experts who act in criminal and family law proceedings. \n495 experts have already secured their place at the conference.
